Performance Fabric: What the Word Actually Promises

Performance fabric upholstery is a claim about where the protection lives. Only one of the three places wears off.

The Material

Performance Fabric at a Glance

Performance fabric noun

Performance fabric upholstery is cloth built to shrug off stains, moisture, abrasion and sunlight.

A property, not a fibre and not a brand.

The Range

Performance Fabric Colours

Eight families, all available solution-dyed. Colour rarely limits a specification — construction does.

Performance fabric upholstery colour range in eight families: whites and creams, beige and taupe, browns, greys, greens, blues, warm colours and darks

Same colour, completely different character. Weave decides how a piece reads across a room.

Colour is the last thing to settle. Weave, fibre and finish decide how the same shade reads across a room — and how it wears. The fade and rub numbers on a sample tag come from published methods, most of them written by the AATCC.

Solution Dyeing

Where the Colour Lives

One decision separates performance fabric upholstery that survives sun and strong cleaning from cloth that does not — makers like Sunbrella build whole lines on it. See also upholstery fabric.

Colour goes in first

Solution-Dyed

Pigment enters the polymer before the fibre is extruded. Wear it down and you expose more of the same colour.

Piece-Dyed & Yarn-Dyed

Colour is added after the fibre exists. Wear it down and you expose the undyed core.

Cleaning Codes

The Cleaning Code Decides What You May Use

Four letters under the cushion. An instruction, not a grade — the wrong one makes a small mark permanent.

W

Water-based cleaners only

  • Distilled water, white cloth
  • Water-based upholstery cleaner
  • Solvent or dry-cleaning fluid
S

Solvent-based cleaners only

  • Dry-cleaning solvent, sparingly
  • Vacuuming and brushing
  • Water, damp cloths, steam
WS

Either is acceptable

  • Water-based cleaner
  • Solvent cleaner
  • Saturating the cushion
X

No liquid at all

  • Vacuuming, soft brush head
  • Water, solvent, foam, steam
  • Home spot-cleaning

Test every product somewhere hidden first. If the code is X, or the tag has gone, stop at vacuuming and call our spot cleaning service.

What We Do

Performance Fabric Upholstery, Homes and Businesses

Performance fabric upholstery cannot be re-coloured in place the way leather can, so the work divides in two.

Keep the cloth

Cleaning, Extraction and Cushion Work

Most cushions that feel finished are tired cloth over dead foam.

  • Cleaning and extraction to code
  • Degreasing of headrests and arms
  • Cushion re-filling
  • Re-application of a topical finish

Panel Replacement and Full Reupholstery

For businesses we phase commercial fabric reupholstery, seating replacement and foam replacement so a room stays open.

Questions

Questions We Are Asked Most

What is performance fabric upholstery?

Performance fabric upholstery is cloth built to resist stains, moisture, abrasion or fading. The name tells you where that protection sits: in the fibre, behind the cloth, or in a finish on top. Only the finish wears off.

What is the difference between solution-dyed and piece-dyed?

Solution-dyed colour goes into the polymer before the fibre is made, so it runs through the whole strand. Piece-dyed colour is added after and sits on the outside, which is why solution-dyed cloth takes strong cleaning and long sun.

Is performance fabric better than leather?

They fail differently. Performance fabric upholstery is stronger against spills and sun fade. Leather is stronger for repair: a scuffed panel is re-coloured in place, while a damaged fabric panel is replaced.

Is performance fabric good for restaurants and hotels?

Yes, when it is specified properly. The abrasion rating and the cleaning code matter more than the marketing name, and a barrier backing keeps spills out of the foam. See our commercial services.
