A hole is missing material, not a loose thread
Nothing is left to sew together. The opening gets bridged from underneath, filled level, grained, then coloured and sealed until the panel reads whole — in your room, on your furniture.
What an actual hole looks like
Every one of these came to us as leather hole repair. The shape names the cause: a burn leaves a charred ring, a tear leaves clean edges, and on faux leather or vinyl the film curls back from the opening. On a stitch line it is also a seam repair.
Long split, foam showing
Punched through, edges curled
Through at the seam
Barely open, foam behind
Cigarette burn, straight through
Round hole, cracks radiating
A pinprick, this year
Four frames from the same repair
One panel, four points in a single visit. This is what leather hole repair looks like between the photo you send us and the one we send back.
A clean puncture the width of a pencil.
The white is filler. It sits proud on purpose.
What is left of it reads as a faint ridge.
Grain and sheen match the panel around it.
The size of the opening decides the method
Hold a dime against it, then a credit card. Everything about leather hole repair — hours, cost, whether the panel survives — follows from that one measurement.
Backed, filled, grained
A support goes in behind the opening, filler builds up in thin coats, a grain plate presses the texture back. Usable that evening.
A sub-patch first
Leather is fed through the hole and bonded to the underside. Without it the fill has nothing to stand on and drops through.
The section comes out
Past a point a fill reads as a repair from the doorway. We cut the section out and set new leather in — panel replacement.
A cigarette hole in a Murray Hill club chair
Round, the width of a pencil, burnt edges, dead centre of the seat. Five moves, one afternoon, chair never left the Murray Hill apartment.
Cut back to sound hide
Charred fibre never bonds. Trimming it back makes the hole bigger first — the only way the rest holds.
Supported, then filled thin
A sub-patch is bonded underneath so the fill has a floor. Coats go on thin; thick ones shrink as they cure.
Levelled and grained
The last coat comes flush, then a plate taken off the same panel presses its grain into the fill.
Colour mixed to the panel
Not to a swatch book. The chair had ten years of light on it, so colour is built against the seat itself.
Sealed to the same sheen
Matt, satin or gloss, matched last. The right colour under the wrong sheen still catches the eye.
Where the hole was
No throw cushion, no dye washed over the whole seat. The fill is levelled into the grain, the colour carried out until there is no edge to find.
When a hole is not the real problem
Leather hole repair works when the hide around the opening is still sound. Press beside it with a thumb: if it powders, flakes or lifts, the fill only buys a firm island in a failing panel.
Finish lifting across every cushion — nothing left to bond to. This is reupholstery — and for a venue with a whole row of them, a bulk project.
Sound hide around the mend. The grain carries straight across and the repair ages at the same rate as the rest.
Leather hole repair questions
Will the repair be invisible?
On pigmented and corrected-grain finishes, close to it. On aniline there is no coating to hide behind, so the mend reads as honest work rather than as nothing at all.
How big a hole can be repaired?
Up to roughly a credit card, as a sub-patch and fill. Past a hand we cut the section out and set new leather in — panel replacement.
Do you come to the house?
Yes. Leather hole repair is done in your home, office or venue across the five boroughs, Long Island and New Jersey. Nothing leaves the room.
My cat made it. Will it happen again?
Probably, a few inches away. The mend is as strong as the hide, not stronger, so nothing about it makes the next panel safer. See cat scratch repair.
The Leather Conservation Centre treats a hole the same way: lost hide is bridged, never regrown. Cigarette ignition of upholstered furniture — the cause behind most we see — is long-studied in NIST fire research.
Lay a coin beside it and take two pictures
One close shot with the coin for scale, one of the whole piece. Enough to price leather hole repair, or to tell you it is the wrong answer. We cover New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.
