Leather Scratch Repair
Leather scratch repair for claw marks, scuffs and surface damage on furniture.
We restore damaged leather by repairing the surface, matching the colour and rebuilding the protective finish — without reupholstering the entire piece when replacement isn't necessary.
Leather Scratches We Repair
The eight leather scratch repair jobs we get called out for most, and how each panel finishes.
Light surface scratches
Sitting in the topcoat. Levelled and refinished, no filling.
Deep scratches
Through the colour. Filled in thin passes, re-grained, refinished.
Cat scratches
Worked as one panel, not mark by mark. Our most common scratch job.
Dog claw marks
Heavier than cat damage. Rebuilt, then refinished across the panel.
Scuffs & abrasions
Rubbing across a chair arm. Surface work only, no filling.
Scratched edges
Edges and piping wear through first. Rebuilt along the seam line.
Colour loss from scratches
Scratches that took the pigment with them. Recoloured to an even panel.
Multiple scratch marks
Overlapping marks, treated as a single panel so the finish stays even.
More in the before and after gallery.
Not Every Leather Scratch Needs The Same Repair
Two marks can look identical from standing height and need completely different repairs. A fingernail and raking light settle which is which.

Damage Stays In The Finish
A fingernail glides across. Nothing is gone — the topcoat has stopped reflecting evenly. Scuff repair, not filling.

Pigment Gone, Lighter Layer Showing
The nail drops slightly. Colour is cut through to a paler layer — hence the bright hairlines.

The Surface Must Be Rebuilt First
The nail catches and holds. Levelled and rebuilt in thin passes before any colour work.

The Leather Has Separated
Parted, not scored — no longer a scratch. That is tear repair, or full reupholstery once several panels have gone.
Can Your Scratched Leather Be Restored?
Most of it can. What we look for on arrival is whether the leather is still whole — everything above that line is finish work.
Surface scratching
Highly repairable. Levelled and refinished on the piece.
Lost colour
Repairable. Matched against the piece, then recoloured across the panel.
Rough or broken finish
Repairable. The surface is prepared and rebuilt before colour goes on.
Leather Furniture We Repair
Same craft on every piece. What changes is access, panel size and how visible the area is.

The Repair Shouldn't Look Like A Patch
Colour is a third of it. A perfect colour at the wrong gloss still catches the eye across the room.
Colour match
Mixed to the surrounding leather, not a generic brown or black. Furniture fades unevenly, so the reference is the piece in front of us.
Sheen match
Matte, satin and gloss reflect light differently. Set as its own step, after colour — it is what gives a bad repair away.
Texture integration
Grain is re-created across the repair, instead of leaving a smooth patch in a grained panel.
Cat Scratches On Leather Furniture
Claws leave anything from fine surface lines to damage that lifts and roughens the leather. How deep they went decides the repair. Because scratching is normal feline behaviour, one corner usually takes it all.
It is a panel, not a list of scratches
Forty marks treated individually leaves forty slightly different repairs side by side. The arm face is worked as one.
The fibre is lifted, not just cut
A claw drags rather than slices, raising the edges. Those are laid back down first or the fill sits proud.
Finished as one surface
Colour, sheen and grain carried out to the seams, so the eye has no edge to catch on.
Leather Scratch Repair By Hide Type
Depth decides the method. The leather decides how invisible the result gets.
Not sure which you have? The materials guide tells them apart, or send a photo.
Repair The Damage — Not The Entire Sofa
Scratches almost never justify recovering a whole piece. Knowing where the line sits saves you the larger job.
Leather Scratch Repair
When the leather is sound and the damage is localised.
- Keeps the existing upholstery
- Localised to the damaged panel
- Colour matched to your own leather
- Usually done on-site in one visit
Reupholstery
When the material itself has failed, not just been marked.
- Multiple failed panels rather than one
- Widespread cracking, peeling or splitting
- Leather no longer sound enough to build on

Before You Book
Can scratches in leather be repaired?
In most cases, yes. The damaged area is rebuilt so it reads as part of the surrounding panel again. What varies is how much work the depth demands, and how closely it reads under direct light.
Can deep scratches be repaired?
Usually, provided the hide is sound underneath. A scratch cut through the colour is filled in several thin passes, textured to match the grain, then coloured. Longer than surface work, but not a different service.
Can you repair cat scratches on leather?
Yes, and it is the most common scratch job we take. Claw damage is rarely one mark, so the arm face or corner is treated as a panel rather than a list of individual scratches.
Will I still see the scratch afterward?
On pigmented and semi-aniline leather a completed repair normally disappears at conversational distance. Under light raking directly across the panel, close inspection can sometimes still find it. We say so before starting.
Can you match my leather colour?
Colour is mixed against your own leather and matched to an unworn area of the same piece, so it accounts for how the furniture has aged. Sheen is matched separately — the right colour at the wrong gloss still reads as a patch.
Do you repair scratches on aniline leather?
We do, with the expectation set first. Aniline has no surface coating, so scratches darken rather than lighten. A repair can be brought close, but invisible is not a promise we make on aniline.
Do you have to take my furniture away?
Most scratch work is completed in your home. Filling, texturing and colouring a panel does not require stripping the piece. Furniture only leaves if the damage needs frame or upholstery work behind the panel.
Is leather scratch repair better than replacing the panel?
For localised damage, almost always. It keeps the original leather and avoids introducing a new panel that has not aged alongside the rest. Replacement makes sense when the material itself has failed.
Can scratches on a leather sofa be repaired on-site?
Yes. On-site is how we normally handle sofa scratch work across New York City and northern New Jersey. The technician brings colour, fill and finishing equipment to you.
How do I get a quote for leather scratch repair?
Send two photos — one straight on, one with light raking across the surface so the marks throw a shadow. That establishes the depth and gives you a realistic quote.
A Photo Settles The Depth Question
