Brown leather wingback chair with nailhead trim in a dark panelled room, ready for leather chair repair

Nothing on a chair faces the wall.

A sofa hides two-thirds of itself against the plaster. A chair stands in the open, so every panel is on show.

After

Common leather chair problems we fix.

Real problems. Real solutions.

Which one you have decides whether the leather chair repair is colour, a fill, a let-in panel or a new cover.

Four chairs, four different answers.

Four outcomes

Four unrelated problems. None needed the treatment any of the others got.

Seams on every edge, so it was cut new and let in. One new piece, the rest untouched.

Crazing, with the hide underneath still sound

The finish had broken up but the hide below was intact. Filled, then recoloured panel-wide.

A burn hole, filled level and grained back

Small, deep, nowhere to hide it. Filled flush and grained to match either side.

A surface peeling off in flakes, so the seat was recovered

A bonded top coat lifting off its backing. That bond cannot be remade, so the seat was recovered.

How it works.

Simple. Convenient. Professional.

The outside back is the access panel on almost every chair — seat platform, arm fronts, joints and springs are all reached through it. So photograph the back even when the damage is at the front. Then which hide you have decides how far the work can go: an unfinished aniline of the kind tanned by houses like Horween takes colour quite differently from a pigmented factory finish.

Leather chair repair, answered.

Still have questions?
Can one panel be replaced without recovering the whole chair?

Usually, yes, provided the damage stops at a seam. A chair is built from separate panels, so an arm, an outside back or a seat can be cut new and let into the existing cover. What decides it is not the size of the tear but whether it crosses a seam line.

My chair only looks worn on one arm. Is that a repair or a recolour?

Both, in that order, and the recolour is rarely limited to the arm. Colour on the worn band alone leaves a visible edge where new meets old, so the panel is taken seam to seam and the transition falls on a stitch line.

Do you have to take the chair away?

It depends how deep the work goes. Colour, filling and small let-in repairs are regularly done in the room. Anything that needs the cover off the frame goes to the workshop.

The leather is peeling off in flakes. Can that be repaired?

Not by putting something on top of it. Flaking is a bonded surface separating from its backing, and once that bond has failed there is nothing sound for a new finish to hold to. The affected panels have to be recovered.

My seat has gone soft but the leather is fine. What is that?

That is the foam and the platform underneath, not the cover. A seat interior is a consumable and wears out faster than good hide. The foam, webbing and springs are rebuilt and the original leather goes straight back on.

How should I photograph a chair for a quote?

Three frames in daylight: straight on, from the side, and from behind. Then one close-up with the leather bent, so we can see whether a crack opens up. Most leather chair repair quotes are settled on those four photos.

Send three photos: front, side, back.

That is enough to say whether the leather chair repair is colour, a let-in panel or a new cover, and to price it. Text them and you get an answer on those photos, not a form to fill in first.
