Some Seats Lift Out.
The Rest Get Rebuilt.

A cushion is a cover over a core you can swap. A seat pad is foam built onto a board or stapled to the frame — it cannot be refilled, only remade. Which one you own decides the whole job, and every seat cushion replacement NYC quote we write starts by naming it.

Materials and making

A Better Seat Starts On The Inside

Good seats begin with good materials. A seat cushion replacement NYC build puts premium foam, a hand-fitted cover and precise upholstery into a pad you only ever judge from the top — which is why the parts you cannot see are the ones worth paying for.

  • Premium foam options

Six cores, firm through soft, sat on in the room before anything is cut.

  • Handcrafted fitting

Curves and built-ins are templated in card, never cut from a tape measure alone.

  • Beautiful, long-lasting results

Square corners, even seams, and a cover that still fits the core years later.

A cut section: dense core at the bottom, softer layer above it, fiber wrap, then the cover. Only the top layer is visible from the room.

The dense bottom layer on a bench or platform seat. It carries the load; the softer foam above it does the sitting.

What is actually under the cover

Three Layers, And Only One Of Them Shows

Almost every complaint about a seat — it sits low, it tips forward, it feels hard at the front edge — comes from a layer nobody can see. Replacing the cover on a dead core buys you a good-looking seat that still sits wrong. Replacing the core under a stretched cover gives you a firm seat with a loose skin. The two decisions are separate, and a seat cushion replacement NYC quote prices them separately.

  1. 01
    The core

Foam, or foam over a plywood or webbed base. It carries the weight and sets the height. When a seat has "sunk", this is what failed.

  2. 02
    The wrap

Fiber or a soft foam layer that rounds the edges and stops the cover reading the core's corners. Skip it and a new cushion looks like a box.

  3. 03
    The cover

Leather, vinyl or fabric. Zipped and removable on a true cushion; stapled, stitched or glued on a seat pad. This is the layer that wrinkles first and lies about the rest.

On a loose cushion we can often keep the cover and rebuild what is inside it. On a fixed pad there is no inside to reach without taking the cover off the frame.

What we make

Eight Seats That Wear Out Differently

Each of these is built a different way, so each one fails a different way. The build tells us what the seat cushion replacement NYC job is before we open anything.

Upholstered dining chair seat pad in linen on a dark wood frame

Dining chair pads

Usually a drop-in slip seat on a plywood base. Lifts out, gets recovered on the bench, drops back the same day. See dining chair reupholstery.

Tan leather bench cushion on a blackened steel frame

Bench cushions

Long, unsupported in the middle, and the first thing to bow. Firmer core, sometimes an internal board. More on leather benches.

Channel-tufted leather banquette seat pads in a restaurant

Banquette seat pads

Built onto the frame and fixed to the room. These are rebuilt in place, overnight, so the floor opens on time.

White linen window seat cushions on a built-in bench

Window-seat cushions

Built-in casework, rarely square, and almost never the size the drawing said. Templated on site, cut to the opening.

Round brown leather bar stool seat on a swivel base

Bar-stool seats

Small, round, and hit harder per square inch than anything else in the room. Often a screw-off pad. See leather bar stools.

Conference guest chair with a rebuilt seat pad in navy leather

Guest-chair seats

Lobby and conference seats sit hundreds of times a week. Pad and cover, frame untouched. See office & conference chairs.

Green outdoor seat pads on a steel-frame terrace lounge chair

Outdoor seat pads

Terrace and roof-deck seating needs a core that drains and a cover rated for sun. See outdoor seating.

Custom shaped curved leather seat cushion cut to an irregular built-in

Custom-shaped cushions

Curved, notched, radiused, or wrapped around a column. Templated in card first, cut once. See custom cushions.

Read the seat

Eight Signs The Core Is Finished

Most of these look like a cover problem from standing height. Sit down and they are all the same problem, and all one seat cushion replacement NYC visit.

Flattened seat cushion with collapsed foam and a permanent seating dip

Flattened foam

The dip stays after you stand up. The core has lost its cell structure and will not come back.

Sagging armchair seat cushion sitting low in the frame

Sagging support

You sit lower than you used to and get up harder. Often the webbing under the core, not the core.

Uneven seat cushion surface with a high side and a worn hollow

Uneven shape

One side sits proud of the other. On a two-seat bench this reads instantly from across the room.

Wrinkled cream leather cushion cover that has stretched away from the core

Wrinkled covers

The cover stretched and the core shrank. Slack skin over a smaller core — two failures, one look.

Collapsed front edge on a tan leather cushion with a broken welt line

Collapsed edges

The front edge takes the load every time somebody sits. When it rolls under, the welt line breaks.

Split seam on a cushion cover with frayed thread along the boxing

Split seams

Thread fails before leather does. Caught early this is a seam repair, not a new cover.

Close-up of a metal zipper on a leather cushion cover boxing

Broken zippers

A jammed or missing slider means the cover cannot come off, so nothing inside can be serviced.

Loose seat pad that no longer fits its chair frame and slides in the rebate

Poor fit

The pad slides, rattles or sits proud of the rebate. Usually a replacement cut from the wrong template.

Restaurant banquette seat cushion replacement NYC before and after, with new cores and a new leather cover
Before — cores compressed, cover slackAfter — new cores, new channelled cover

Same banquette, same frame, same night. The left half is what years of service do to a seat that was never meant to be refilled — cores compressed, cover gone slack. The right half is the rebuilt run: new cores, and a new channelled cover the owner chose while we were already in there. Nothing left the building, which is what a seat cushion replacement NYC job looks like in an operating room. More before and after work.

Office guest chair seat cushion replacement NYC before and after, worn grey fabric rebuilt in navy leather
Before — seat dished, grey cover napped and thinAfter — new core, navy leather chosen by the client

A conference guest chair, one of a floor of them. The frame was sound, so only the seat and back pads were rebuilt — and because the cover had to be cut new anyway, the client moved the floor from grey cloth to navy leather while we were already in there.

The work itself

Ten Jobs, Priced On Their Own

A seat cushion replacement NYC quote names only the ones your seat needs. You are never buying the whole list because one line of stitching let go.

  1. New foam seat pad core cut square to the measured opening
    01Foam replacement

New core cut to the measured opening, in the density the seat calls for. Also available as commercial foam replacement.

  2. Fiber and down blend used to refill a seat cushion
    02Cushion refilling

Down and fiber cushions topped up or re-wrapped, with the original cover kept and reused.

  3. Curved seat cushion cut to a card template
    03Custom foam cutting

Curves, notches, radiused fronts and stepped depths, cut from a card template rather than a tape measure.

  4. New brown leather cushion cover fitted over a rebuilt core
    04New leather covers

Cut, sewn and fitted to the rebuilt core. Hide chosen against the rest of the piece, not against a swatch book.

  5. Contract vinyl seat cushion with a welted edge
    05Vinyl reupholstery

Contract vinyl where the seat has to survive cleaning chemicals. See commercial vinyl.

  6. Charcoal tweed fabric seat cushion
    06Fabric reupholstery

Wovens, bouclés and performance cloth from makers like Carnegie, with the rub count matched to how hard the seat is used.

  7. New zipper set into the boxing of a seat cushion cover
    07Zipper replacement

New slider and tape set into the boxing so the cover can come off again next time.

  8. Piping and welt detail on a brown leather cushion corner
    08Piping and welt repair

The cord that defines the cushion's edge, re-run so the shape reads crisp instead of soft.

  9. Seat pad ties and hook-and-loop straps holding a pad to the frame
    09Ties and hook-and-loop

Fastenings that keep a loose pad on its frame — replaced, repositioned or added where there were none.

  10. Fully fabricated brown leather seat cushion
    10Full custom fabrication

Core, wrap, cover and fastening built from nothing for a seat that has no original left to copy.

Choose the feel

Firmness Is A Decision, Not A Default

Sit on the samples before we cut. A dining seat and a reading chair want opposite things, and it is the one seat cushion replacement NYC decision nobody can make for you.

High density foam block cut for a seat cushion core

High-density foam

Firm

The default for dining and desk seats. Holds height longest and gives the least under a hard sitter — it is the density and ILD pairing that decides that, not the thickness.

High resilience blue foam block for a heavy-use seat cushion

High-resilience foam

Extra firm

Springs back fastest. What goes into restaurant banquettes and anything sat on all day.

Foam core with a fiber wrap layer for a softer seat cushion edge

Foam with fiber wrap

Medium

A firm core with a soft shell. Keeps the support and rounds the edge so the cushion is not a box.

Memory foam blend block for a contouring seat cushion

Memory foam blend

Medium

Contours to the sitter over a supporting base. Good for lounge seats, poor for anything shared.

Feather and down fill for a soft seat cushion

Feather and down

Soft

The softest option and the only one that needs plumping. Wrapped over a foam core so it keeps a shape.

Green outdoor grade quick dry foam for terrace seat pads

Outdoor-grade foam

Firm

Open cell, so water passes through instead of sitting in it. Mandatory on terraces and roof decks.

How it runs

Four Steps, And You Are Only Needed For Two

Send one photo to start. A seat cushion replacement NYC job does not need the piece, a showroom visit or a material decision before anything is measured.

  1. Step 01Send a photo

One picture of the seat, straight on. That is usually enough to tell a drop-in pad from a fixed one and to price the range.

  2. Step 02We measure and template

At your address. Curved and built-in seats get a card template; nothing is cut from a tape measure alone.

  3. Step 03You choose firmness and cover

Foam samples to sit on and hides to hold, in the room, under the light the seat actually lives in.

  4. Step 04We build and fit

Loose cushions go to the workshop and come back. Fixed banquettes and built-ins are rebuilt in place, overnight.

Shapes

Square Is The Rare One

Stock cushions come in four sizes. Real rooms do not. Every seat cushion replacement NYC shape below was cut from a template of the seat it sits in.

Rectangular seat cushion shape in cream leather

Rectangular

Benches, window seats and most dining pads. The one shape a stock size sometimes fits.

Trapezoid seat cushion shape tapering front to back

Trapezoid

Dining and side chairs are wider at the front than the back. Cut one square and it binds in the rebate.

T-shaped seat cushion shape for a chair with a projecting front

T-shaped

The seat runs past the arms at the front. The notch has to land exactly where the arm post does.

L-shaped seat cushion shape for a corner banquette return

L-shaped

Corner banquettes and window returns. Built as one piece so there is no seam where people sit.

Curved seat cushion shape for a bow-fronted bench

Curved

Bow fronts and radiused banquettes. The cover is cut on the curve, not eased onto a straight panel.

Round seat cushion shape for a stool

Round

Stools and drum seats. The boxing has to be gathered evenly or the seam wanders off the centre line.

Wedge seat cushion shape thicker at the back than the front

Wedge

Thicker at the back than the front, so the sitter is tipped slightly backward. Common on lounge seating.

Irregular seat cushion shape cut around a built-in obstruction

Irregular

Cut around a column, a radiator or a stair string. Templated in card, checked in the opening, then cut.

Two different jobs

A Home Seat Fails Slowly. A Venue Seat Fails On Schedule.

The seat cushion replacement NYC work is the same. What changes is how the failure arrives and when we are allowed in the room.

Residential window seat cushions in a bright apartment bay

Residential seat cushions

One or two seats, noticed years after they started to go, and usually part of a set where the others still look fine. The job is matching what survived rather than replacing everything.

  • Dining sets where only two chairs are used
  • Window seats and built-in benches
  • Sofa and armchair seats — see sofa cushion replacement
  • Terrace and roof-deck pads
  • Colour matched to the pieces you keep

Commercial seat cushions

A whole run goes at once because it was all installed at once. The constraint is never the upholstery — it is the hours between last service and first cover.

Questions

What People Ask Before Booking

How do I tell a cushion from a seat pad?

Try to lift the seat straight up. If it comes out of the frame it is a drop-in pad, and it can leave with us. If it has a zip around the boxing it is a loose cushion, and the core can be changed without touching the cover. If it does neither, it is fixed to the frame and has to be rebuilt where it stands.

Can you keep my existing cover?

Often, yes. If the leather still has body and the seams are sound, we build a new core to the cover rather than the other way round. What rules it out is leather that has gone brittle or stretched so far it will not pull tight over a full-height core.

Do the chairs have to leave my home?

Loose cushions and drop-in seats travel and come back fitted. Fixed banquettes, window seats and built-ins are rebuilt in place. Nothing that is attached to your building is ever removed from it.

How long does seat cushion replacement take?

A set of drop-in dining seats is usually a few days from template to fitting. A restaurant banquette run is measured in nights rather than days, because the work happens between last service and first cover.

Can you match foam firmness to what I have now?

Yes, and you can also change it deliberately. We bring foam samples to sit on before anything is cut, which is the only way to find out whether you actually liked the old seat or had simply stopped noticing it.

Do you cover outdoor and terrace seating?

Yes. Terrace pads get an open-cell core that drains and a cover rated for UV. Indoor foam in an outdoor seat holds water and fails in a season, whatever the cover is made of.
