School Bus Seat Reupholstery

District fleets and contractors

The seat in front is the seat belt.

Why the cover is safety equipment

A school bus seat answers to two rules at once.

Large school buses mostly carry no belts. The seat is the restraint, and the cover is part of it.

FMVSS 222

Seating and crash protection

What it asks
Seat backs are high, close together and substantially padded, so a passenger is caught by the seat in front. The padding is the restraint.
What a tear does
Foam that has been cut open or has gone hard stops absorbing the impact it was shaped to absorb.

FMVSS 302

Flammability of interior materials

What it asks
The covering has to resist flame at a measured rate. It is a barrier, not a finish.
What a tear does
It exposes foam that burns faster than the cover over it, which is why inspectors write up a cut that shows foam.

What actually fails

Cuts, not wear, are what take a seat out.

A bus interior does not fail gradually the way a dining room does. It fails where somebody opened it.

  • Cuts. Made deliberately, usually along the top of the back where a hand rests. One slit opens a seam and the foam follows it.
  • The aisle edge. The corner every passenger grabs on the way past. It goes shiny, then thin, then open.
  • Flat bottoms. Foam that no longer comes back up. It reads as comfort and counts as protection.

Covers are cut from the panels that came off, so the shape is copied rather than guessed.

Between the last run and the first

A fleet is recovered in the gap, not around it.

The window is fixed before the work is quoted, so the plan runs backwards from the first morning the buses are needed.

Batches, not buses.Seats come out by vehicle and go back into the vehicle they came from, so a part-finished fleet is still a fleet you can run.

The frames stay yours.Steel and pans outlive several covers. That is the whole reason a recover beats buying seats.

More than one bus is one project.A fleet is priced and scheduled as a single programme, and seats travel to the shop and back on our own run.

Before the buses come in

What transport directors ask first.

How much does school bus seat reupholstery cost?

It is quoted against the fleet rather than the seat, because the number moves on how many buses are involved, how many seats in each, whether the foam goes back with the new cover, and which material is specified. Send photographs of the worst seat and a count of buses and seats per bus, and you get a figure for that fleet instead of a range that fits nobody.

Can the whole fleet be done over the summer break?

That is the usual shape of the job, and it is why the count matters more than the calendar. The work is planned backwards from the first run of the new year, in batches sized so that finished buses are back before the next ones leave. Where a summer programme is bigger than one break holds, it is split so the oldest interiors are done first.

Do you replace the foam as well as the cover?

Only where it has gone, but on a school bus that judgement is stricter than on ordinary seating. The padding in a school bus seat back is part of the crash protection rather than a comfort layer, so foam that has hardened or been cut into is replaced rather than covered over. The seat is already open at that point, which is when it costs least to do.

Do the seats have to come out of the bus?

Yes, and that is the efficient way round. Seats unbolt from their mounts and are tagged so each one goes back in the position it came out of, which means the covering work happens on a bench instead of in a narrow aisle. The bus itself is only occupied for the removal and the refit.

Start with a seat and a bus count

Send the worst seat on the oldest bus.

One photograph and a count of buses tell us whether this is a recover, a repair or foam alone. Coach and transit interiors are their own page. Or call (347) 310-7483.
